Configure Smartermail in IIS 7/Server 2008

There are special steps to running SmarterMail on a Windows 2008 64-bit server.  This article goes over when is needed to ensure SmarterMail is installed and runs properly.

  1. Identify is the server is 32 or 64bit. 
  2. Ensure .NET 4.0 is installed.
  1. Login to the server via RDP.
  2. Open services.msc and stop the SmarterMail Web Service.  Open Properties for this service and set it to Disabled.
  3. Create a new site in IIS and name it Smartermail.
  4. Point it to the MRS directory of Smartermail (ex: C:\Program Files (x86)\SmarterTools\SmarterMail\MRS)
  5. Set it to listen on a dedicated IP on port 80 OR specify a hostname (ex.
  6. When the site is created, a matching application pool will be setup as well.
  7. Right-click on the application pool and choose Advanced Settings.
  8. Set the .NET Framework to v4.0 for the application pool.
  9. Set Enable 32-Bit Applications to True (if the 32-bit version of SmarterMail is installed; otherwise, leave it set to False).
  10. Set managed pipeline mode to Classic.
  11. Click OK.
  12. Select the Smartermail site in IIS, click the Handler Mapping icon for the site.
  13. Double-click the aspx handler mapping set for 4.0 variant you're using (there will only be two if it's 64bit, and in that case you select the 4.0 variant ending with _32bit).
  14. Click Request Restrictions...
  15. Select the Access tab.
  16. Change it from Script to Execute.
  17. Test and confirm the Smartermail webmail works.
